A leap day occurs in a leap year. A leap year contains 366 days oppose to the regular 365 days in a normal year. The extra day is referred to as a leap day. In a leap year February has 29 days instead of the regular 28 days. It is a leap year if the year (2020, 2024, etc) is dividable with 4.
In the gregorian calender a year equals 365,2425 day, hence the reason why we have leap years in to ensure that the season remains constant. Without the extra leap day the summer and winter seasons would shift after appr. 730 year .
