How to create “shares” on your Synology NAS?

In this post I will tell you how to create “shares” on your Synology NAS (firmware is "Synology DSM3.2" but the process should be similar in other versions). First you must log into your NAS as an administrator…

You create a shared folder as follows:

1) Press the little arrow in the upper right corner and then select "Control Panel" in the menu that appears:

2) In the menu that appears, select "Shares" in the top line.

3) The window that appears will (if you have not created shares before) be completely empty. To create a new share please click the "Create" in the upper left corner. Then select a name for your new share and possibly a description. I have chosen to call my share "test" and opted not to give it a description. When you are finished click "OK".

4) Now you get to choose which users have access to the drive – and if so, what rights these users should have. If you have not created users on your NAS, you will only see the administrator (admin) and maybe a guest user (guest). In this example I choose to give the administrator full read and write rights to files in this shared, and to deny access for guest users.

When you are finished, press "ok" and you have created a share on your Synology NAS.
